Some Useful links :)

I don't need to write a summary of what each one of these are as they have all the information you need to know about them in their URL :)

Factors that need to be considered when buying a PC or Laptop

I am getting a new laptop for Christmas. My current laptop is now four years old and is plagued with old age problems and I have neither the time, money or patience to keep fixing it and replacing parts.

My new laptop will have all the things I need to use it for college and light personal use. The main factors I will soon have to consider when buying a new laptop are:

#1: Operating system

Windows is the most common operating system so stick with that. Vista Basic or Home Premium will do fine and don't fall into the trap of thinking the OS will actually make much of a difference in your life. For word processing and surfing the web anything will realistically do but stick to Windows.

#2: CPU

Laptops with an insufficient CPU could leave you with a PC that takes seven to eight minutes to fully boot into Windows, provides minimal battery life, and can’t reasonably power the applications you use, ie multiple word processing programs and multiple browsers.
From what I have looked at Intel’s new Core 2 Duo CPU should do the trick. In addition to packing considerable processing power, these chips use less energy (resulting in improved battery life) and generate less heat than previous Pentium CPUs.

#3: RAM

Vista needs 2 GB of RAM to function without slowing down. 1 GB is just not enough. Running multiple Office programs, surfing the web and checking e-mails all take their toll. Picture or sound editing would also require 2GB of RAM so that you don't grow old waiting for your laptop to unfreeze.

#4: Ports

People assume that any modern laptop computer has numerous USB ports, as well as VGA, DVI, serial, and parallel ports, although many don't have a clue what they are. Those same users may learn a painful lesson; increasingly, in another effort at managing costs, laptop manufacturers are reducing the number of ports found on their PCs.
Budget notebook computers often ship with only a pair of USB ports, with no serial, parallel, or DVI ports and only a single VGA port (if a video port is even included). When purchasing a laptop, review the model’s technical specifications and make sure that the chassis includes the ports you require. The proper ports could mean the difference between a frustrating useless laptop and your best friend in the world.

#5: Screen size

Models with 12-inch displays are much easier to carry from home to college and from lecture to lecture. They’re also much lighter. The bigger they are the more power they use which drains more battery. If a small screen is too small I could always hook it up to a big monitor when at home (assuming I have the right ports therefore see previous point :) )
Screen size also determines the size of the keyboard. If a small keyboard gives you typers cramp then get wired or wireless keyboard to use when typing up those burdensome essays

#6: Integrated wireless

An integrated wireless adaptor is vital and should be standard. Unfortunately I saw one the one day in PC World that didn't have one; but then it was a brand I never heard of so maybe that's why. In general your unlikely to find a laptop without one but just make sure

#7: Integrated Bluetooth

This may seem like a luxury but soon it will a must have feature. More and more things are using Bluetooth to connect to your laptop: speakers, mouses, keyboards, phones cameras. Soon wires are going to go the way of the dodo completely and many devices will use Bluetooth to Wring the Dodos neck (continuing that metaphor a little too far? lol)

#8: Battery life

Battery life will be so important to me. A long battery life will remove the necessity of getting a laptop seat in the library. It will also be vital when using the laptop in lectures. Don't take the word of the manufacturers when it say x number of hours. Check with the people in the shop (usually the technical people behind the desk and not the sales assistants) if it is a good battery or not. A laptop battery has a number of  "cells" in it. most laptops come with 6 or 9 cells but some have 12. The ones with 12 will last so much longer.

#9: Brand

This may be the most important factor to consider. It is almost always better to get a well trusted big brand when dealing with electronics. The after care service will be much better and the warranties are longer and more inclusive. The better brands cost more but will last longer.

Summary: All these factors are important but cost will ultimately determine which is bought. The amount of money you have to spend will determine how many of these other factors you can fulfil and to what extent. Balancing the best specifications with the money available is the true challenge.

Articles concerning Technology

Here are two article I found relating to technology.

The first is about solar energy. I am interested in this subject as I believe it is one of the ways in which the human race can sustainably generate power in the future.

The second has to do with Sony's plan to roll out a tv service that uses the internet to deliver tv through all their devices ie. the Playstion 3, Sony televisions and Sony Blu-ray players.

Solar Energy:  http://gigaom.com/cleantech/nrg-gobbles-up-solar-power-partners-for-distributed-solar/

Sony Televisions: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/sony-to-make-its-move-into-online-television-6263313.html

Summary:  Sony is planning to change the way people in the US watch television. A new system will send tv straight to their tv's via the internet through Sony devices like the Playstation and Blu-ray players.
The Japanese electronics company hopes to be able to establish a tv service that will be able to go up against the huge media moguls that monopolise the American television system. In this case the big networks hold all the cards.
There are already more than 18 million homes in the US with an internet-enabled PlayStation 3, and Sony's new tvs all come with the ability to connect to the net. A service of movie rentals on demand already exists and this new idea is an expansion of this.
Apparently Sony approached some of the big networks about sharing content as Sony doesnt own any Tv channels only movie and film studios.
Sony faces a huge challenge in assembling a range of TV channels that customers would be willing to pay for. It is believed that the new system will most likely add to existing cable and satellite networks and not be able replace them fully for many years to come.
The technology is reliable and is a viable alternative.
Already internet based movie on demand and free services like Hulu are opening up the internet as medium for entertainment.

Opinion:
This is the way forward in my opinion. If even RTE have an online "player" then it is clear that it is a viable, cost effective way of broadcasting. 4OD is extremely successful also and is vital to the likes of students.
Students rarely pay for television, it is an unjustifiable expense. Even paying for a tv license can usually be avoided. The likes of RTE Player and 4OD are an extremely useful resource for the financially challenged.
Americans have the reputation for being set in their ways when it comes to some things and yet are leaders in other forms of progress. Whether or not they lead or are dragged online streaming will rise and at least rival cable and satellite in the future. The loss of Steve Jobs who was planning on entering this new market will possibly hinder the progress

I Love Angry Birds!!!

I love angry birds but don't own a single piece device capable of playing it until now! Google Chrome can now download and use apps!!! I don't own an iphone or an ipod. I have a Nokia Phone and a Sony mp3 player but now I am saved from having to splurge on a new device just because I got addicted to a game on my boyfriends ipod!!!

Here is a link to the article that brightened up my day : http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/googles-browser-apps-hit-millions-of-downloads-a-day-6265735.html

I found this article thanks to facebook's new read articles thing. Someone in my News Feed read this and it caught my eye :)

Some optical illusions you may enjoy :)

Here is just a small collection of optical illusions you may enjoy to look at. We looked at many such illusions in our Perception and Ergonomics class. We learned how the brain perceives images and interprets sensory data.

Steve Jobs is dead!!! OMG (never heard of him before now)

Steve Jobs is dead. He died of pancreatic cancer on the 5th of October 2011. He was a man I knew very little about but his death shook the world and motivated me to find out more about this amazing man.
Here is an extract from Wikipedia about this great man's life and untimely death, May He Rest In Peace.

Steven Paul Jobs (February 24th 1955-October 5 2011) was an American businessman and inventor widely recognised as the charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief-executive officer of Apple Inc.

Here also is a memorial to the great man who revolutionised the computer era.

Hello people of the world and beyond (you know who you are!!!). This is a blog I am writing as part of a CA for my ICT module in college. It shall contain tid bits to do with Information, Communication and even Technology! It will also include things on psychology because I love the smell of psychology in the morning :)

(May I just say that the word blog keeps catching my eye and to me at least it looks like a word spelt wrong)

And so ends my introduction, I hope it is now clear to see that it is amazing :)

Inheritence

I have just finished reading a book called Inheritence. It was the final book of what was originally going to be a trilogy but turned out to become a quadrilogy. I read the first three books when i was younger and although I am nowq in my twentieth year and the book is aimed for a younger readership I decided I wanted to read it.
I am glad i got this book and read it. the synopsis at the start was exactly what a reader like myself needed. The book involved dragons, magic, elves and dwarves as well a plethora of other fantastical creatures.
This new book was at the same high standard as the previous three novels although there were certain parallels that could be drawn between its story line and parts of films I've seen ion the last few years. This I forgive as everyone needs inspiration from somewhere and I doubt the author has been to his phantom world

Hi

I am not passionate about much. I am not a very passionate person. I study psychology. I read quite a bit. I suppose i could write reviews for books I have read? I have mainly read fantasy and science fiction books. I am currently reading a book set in the future where the dead are coming back from the beyond and possesing people. They get powers to manipulate matter and energy. Apparently when you die there is a void like space and most people pass on to another place but some get stuck and they dont like it in there much and want to leave. oh yeah and people fly about in spaceships and colonise planets and there is this sort of UN types organisation between the planets. there are also living shios and living space stations and unusual cultures oh and aliens!!!

But seriously it is very well written and is imaginative, engaging and has that quality that makes it hard to put down and ewven harder not to pick up again.

And here comes the slight problem of me not having the bnook with me and me not being able to rtemember its name! it was written by something something Hamilton and its part of a trilogy. i'll get back to you on the details. 'Till next time babes and babettes :)
